Historical Results From Canadian Divisional Championships

In the early days of the Canadian Championships, you could have counted the number of competitors on both hands. By the early seventies, entries were swelling and the CFSA found that allowing the top three skaters from each Section to compete at Canadians was creating an impossible situation for its judges. In an effort to cut down the number of competitors, the CFSA passed a series of amendments in 1972 to allow for a competition that fell between Sectionals and Canadians. These events were known as Divisionals.

The Divisional Championship Committee was first chaired by David Dore and the first three Divisionals were held in 1974. The Western event was held in Edmonton; the Central in Chatham, Ontario and the Eastern in Ottawa. Later, a fourth Divisional event was added for Atlantic Canada. The latter event was first held in 1977 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. As of 1980, the CFSA defined the four Divisionals in the good old red rulebook thusly:

Western - British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan sections
Central - Manitoba, Northern Ontario and Western Ontario sections
Eastern - Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario and Quebec sections
Atlantic - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward and Newfoundland sections

The Atlantic Canadian Divisionals proved to be controversial from the start. One of the reasons that the Divisionals were created in the first place was arguably to keep out 'lower calibre' skaters from the Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador Sections. Barbara Graham, who was the CFSA's technical co-ordinator in 1977, attended the very first Atlantic Divisionals in Fredericton and told the press, "We're pleased to have the Atlantic division in the Canadian Championships; however, not the lower skaters. Quality should certainly come to the fore in national championships in any sport and here we have some of the Atlantic divisional competitors having qualified through the Atlantic divisionals and they are weak and should not be in a national championship. The junior dance champions Marie McNeil and Rob McCall certainly deserve to be here and they have proven they are the best at the junior level. But the other two dance teams in the junior category from the Atlantic divisionals have placed well toward the bottom." In 1986, the rules were changed to allow Quebec skaters the option of qualifying for Canadians either through the Atlantic or Eastern Divisionals.

Divisionals got another overhaul by the mid-nineties, when it was decided that it logistically made more sense to stagger senior events between the four Divisionals, only holding two qualifying events per discipline in the country. Atlantics, for instance, might have hosted a senior men's and dance event, whereas Westerns might have held women's and pairs. By 2001, Divisionals were scrapped altogether in favour of qualifying rounds at the Canadian Championships. The qualifying rounds were ditched in 2008 in favour of a combined qualifying competition in 2008. This event was called the BMO Skate Canada Senior Challenge in 2008 and 2009, the Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge in 2010 and 2011 and afterwards, the Skate Canada Challenge.

In an effort to celebrate the important history of these events, I've compiled an extremely incomplete collection of results from the various Divisional Championships, qualifying rounds and the Skate Canada Challenge. The majority of the Divisional results were culled from various newspaper archives and back issues of "The Canadian Skater" magazine. Emery Leger, The Moncton Public Library, Winnipeg Public Library, Thunder Bay Public Library, Greater Sudbury Public Library, Campbellton Centennial Library, Newmarket Public Library, Provincial Resource Library of the Arts & Culture Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and Guelph Public Library all provided valuable assistance with missing results from various years. More modern results from qualifying rounds and the Skate Canada Challenge are courtesy IceXel.com and Skate Canada's published records. If you are able to add to any of these records, please reach out. I'd love to hear from you!
